Let’s do the math

With so much “fake news” all over the Internet, we want to make sure that everyone can check our calculations.

The government can hire 10,000 policemen, teachers, and nurses. That’s a total of 30,000 new hires. You can check the average salaries of each of these professionals. Policemen make about $49,105-$57,316. (You can look this up here:  https://www1.salary.com/Police-Officer-Salary.html )

Likewise, the average middle school teacher makes about $45,745 (see: https://www.payscale.com/research/US/Job=Middle_School_Teacher/Salary)

and the average registered nurse makes about $61,632 (see: https://www.payscale.com/research/US/Job=Registered_Nurse_(RN)/Hourly_Rate)

One always has to add fringe benefits and other costs to the salary, the employer usually expects the cost of an employee to be a bit less than twice the actual salary. Therefore, a cost of about $100,000 for each policeman, teacher, or nurse hired is a reasonable estimate.

So, we have 30,000 new hires, each at $100,000 per year. This is a total cost of 30,000 times 100,000 = 3,000,000,000 = $3 Billion. Next we say that the Government can do this for 10 years, so multiply by 10. The total cost of all of these hires is $30 Billion.

Next, we are building police stations. The average construction cost per square foot for a police station is listed here: http://evstudio.com/construction-cost-per-square-foot-for-a-police-station/

The web page tells us that the average construction cost is $241 per square foot. A nicely laid-out police station has about 4,000 square foot. 241 times 4000 = $964,000. We have rounded this to about $1 Million. Building 500 new police stations will therefore cost about $500 Million.

For schools, the average construction cost is $160 per sqft. A nice new school has about 60,000 sqft and would therefore cost 60,000 times $160 = $9.6 Million. We round this up to $10 Million. 500 new schools at $10 Million each would therefore cost $5 Billion.

Hospitals are expensive to build. The cost is generally given per bed. We are thinking about the government building small community hospitals in rural areas that are currently underserved. A 30 bed hospital will cost about $50 Million to build (see: https://www.quora.com/How-much-does-it-cost-to-build-a-hospital ) Since we want to build 1000 new hospitals, the total cost is $50 Billion. Now we can add up the costs for the police stations, schools and hospitals and we come to a grand total of $55.5 Billion.

If we take the 2,500,000 homeless children in America (https://www.nbcnews.com/business/economy/one-30-american-children-homeless-report-says-n250136) and provide them $12,000 each, we have a total of $30 Billion, multiplying this by 10 years, and we have $300 Billion given out to homeless children (grand total = $355.5 Billion).

There are approximately 4 million children in kindergarten this year (https://www.census.gov/prod/2013pubs/p20-571.pdf), each lunch is about $3 and there are about 300 days in a school year. This would cost 3.6 Billion dollars per year, or $36 Billion over 10 years (grand total = $391.5 Billion)

There are 20.4 million Americans currently in college or university (https://nces.ed.gov/fastfacts/display.asp?id=372). Giving each of them $7,500 would cost 153 Billion dollars. Doing this for 4 years would be 540 Billion dollars (grand total = $936 Billion).

$300 Billion towards air traffic control modernization would give a grand total spent of $1,236 Billion, or $1.236 Trillion.

If the government now takes the approximately $200 Billion remaining and invests this money at a net return of 10%, they will receive approximately $20 Billion in interest per year. Dividing these funds among 1 million cancer patients gives each $20,000. This would be sustainable for the next 100 years.
